Dealing with a Flood Claim is not as easy as it should be...

Flood claims are very technical.  The first hurdle is to determine if there was a general condition of flooding at your property.  You may be asking, what qualifies as a general condition of flooding?  The NFIP defines a flood as water inundation of normally dry land from any source, which covers either 2 acres of land, or 2 or more properties (parcels of land), one of which may be a public roadway that is inundated with flood water.

Flood claims are not typically covered under your standard homeowners policy, except in some rare circumstances.  Most people will need to have a separate policy to cover this type of damage.  Dealing with Flood Claims in the aftermath of an event like this can be complicated and often confusing for the victims.  Flood policies are unique, and these claims need to be handled accordingly.  There are firm timelines for filing Proof of Loss forms and other items you need to be aware of.  You will definitely want to review your policy to ensure that you comply with all of the post-loss obligations.

These policies are either going to be backed by the NFIP which is run by FEMA or by a private company that offers flood insurance.  If it is a private company, they are required to provide, at a minimum, the same coverages as provided by the NFIP.  The benefit of having a private flood policy is that it may offer some additional coverages that are not available in the NFIP such as assistance with additional living expenses and replacement cost coverage on your personal property, as well as being obligated to follow Florida laws & statutes during the adjustment of your claim.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help with a flood claim as there are timelines that must be complied with.
